Bagley & Company · History- Trusted since 1885 - Bagley & Company originated as F. D. Day & Co. in 1885. Cassius Bagley worked as a teenager in the store, and in the 1890’s became the owner and changed the name to Bagley and Company. Business in Duluth was booming with logging, iron ore and shipping and had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the country. The store provided its clientele with the finest jewelry, china, crystal and silver. Cassius Bagley was very civic minded and a leader in the community. The store was remodeled in 1904 by top woodworkers from Chicago who built the designs there, and brought the fixtures to Duluth via train and assembled them in the store. To this day, one-half of the store remains intact with this beautifully designed woodwork. The second-generation owner was Cassius and Minnie Bagley’s daughter, Charlene Bagley Heimbach. Charlene was also a leading lady in the community. With her savvy and leadership, the store survived the Great Depression and Duluth’s ever changing economy. The third-generation ownership went to Charlene and Carlilse Heimbach’s son, Richard Bagley Heimbach when he returned from World War II. At this time, Duluth’s economy and population was based on servicing. Once again, the store’s clientele’s needs had changed, and Dick Heimbach’s leadership guided the store in adapting to those changing needs, providing the store’s clientele with what they needed, hardworking people who knew they would get what they paid for at Bagley’s. Dick’s wife, Jane Lachmund Heimbach, joined him in the business after raising their children and together they expanded the store’s giftware and wedding registry, all the while maintaining the store’s fine reputation for integrity and quality. Richard L. Heimbach, the fourth generation, came into the business in 1979. He currently runs the business with his wife Lori Hilton. |
